Iran Warns of Regional Blackout if US Targets Power Grid

Tehran: Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, issued a stark warning on Thursday, cautioning that the region would 'go dark' if the United States attacked Iran's electricity infrastructure.

According to Anadolu Agency, Larijani took to the US social media platform X to respond to comments made by US President Donald Trump. Trump had suggested that Washington possesses the capability to dismantle Iran's electric capacity within an hour. Larijani countered this claim by stating that such an action would result in a regional blackout within half an hour, creating conditions for US servicemen to seek safety.

Trump's remarks were made during a press interaction where he detailed the potential impact of striking key infrastructure in Tehran and other locations in Iran. He emphasized the destruction of Iran's electrical capacity, which could incapacitate the country for decades, while expressing a preference to avoid such a scenario.

The backdrop to these tensions is the escalation in regional hostilities following a joint US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28. This attack resulted in significant casualties, with approximately 1,300 people killed and over 10,000 injured. In retaliation, Iran has conducted drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Iraq, and Gulf countries where US military assets are stationed.
