Tehran: The US will face growing economic consequences from its 'war of choice' on Iran, the Iranian foreign minister warned Saturday. On US social media company X, Abbas Araghchi said Americans would be forced to bear the rising costs of a conflict with Tehran.
According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi emphasized that Americans should brace for the economic repercussions, highlighting potential increases in U.S. debt and mortgage rates. He mentioned that the real financial strain would begin once these factors start to escalate. Araghchi's comments came amidst already rising economic pressures in the US, such as auto loan delinquencies reaching a more than 30-year high.
The warning from Iran's foreign minister follows heightened regional tensions after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28. Tehran retaliated against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, which also led to the closure of the critical Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan, took effect on April 8, although subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to secure a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely, yet the underlying tensions remain unresolved, with economic impacts potentially looming large for the US.
