Tehran: Tehran's "restraint is over," an Iranian parliamentary spokesman declared on Sunday as ongoing tensions with the United States continued to escalate. "As of today (Sunday), our restraint is over. Any attack on our vessels will be met with a heavy and decisive Iranian response against US vessels and bases," stated Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesman for Iran's parliament's Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, on the US social media platform X.
According to Anadolu Agency, Rezaei further warned, "the clock is ticking against the Americans' interests," suggesting that the best course for the United States would be to surrender and make concessions. He emphasized that the US must adapt to what he described as the new regional order.
The heightened regional tensions began when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, which led to retaliation from Tehran against Israel and US allies in the Gulf. This conflict also resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passageway.
Following these developments, a ceasefire took effect on April 8, facilitated by Pakistani mediation. However, talks held in Islamabad failed to yield a lasting agreement. While US President Donald Trump extended the truce without a specific deadline, it allowed for diplomatic efforts towards a permanent resolution to the conflict.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, since April 13, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, further intensifying the situation.
