Israeli Army Chief Threatens Expansion of Military Offensive in Gaza

Rafah: Israeli Chief of General Staff Eyal Zamir has issued a stern warning regarding the ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, indicating a potential escalation if Israeli captives are not released. During a visit to Rafah in southern Gaza, Zamir emphasized that the Israeli forces are maintaining operational pressure and are prepared to intensify their actions if necessary, according to a statement released by the Israeli army.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has also made strong declarations, threatening to dismantle Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government unless Gaza is completely occupied, a military administration is set up, and former US President Donald Trump's proposal to relocate Palestinians from the Strip is enacted. This political pressure adds another layer to the already complex situation in the region.

Since March 2, Israel has kept Gaza's crossings closed, preventing essential supplies from reaching the besieged territory, despite reports of a deepening humanitarian crisis. The Israeli army resumed its offensive on March 18, breaking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that had been in place since January 19. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 51,400 Palestinians since October 2023, the majority of whom were women and children.

The international community has also been drawn into the conflict. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
