Beirut: The Israeli army announced on Saturday that an officer and two soldiers were injured, with one sustaining serious injuries, following a drone explosion near their positions in southern Lebanon. The drone was reportedly launched by Lebanon's Hezbollah, escalating tensions in the volatile region.
According to Anadolu Agency, the army's statement detailed that a reserve officer and another soldier were moderately wounded in the incident. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted Israeli military vehicles, troop gatherings, and positions in southern Lebanon. Additionally, the group reported intercepting an Israeli drone.
Hezbollah stated that its operations were a response to Israeli violations of a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon and ongoing attacks on southern Lebanese towns. Despite the ceasefire, which has been in place since April 17 and extended until mid-May, exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have persisted.
Since March 2, following the onset of the Iran war, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of over 2,700 individuals and displaced more than 1 million people. Israel continues to maintain a "buffer zone" on Lebanese soil. In an effort to address the ongoing conflict, the United States is scheduled to host peace talks between Israel and Lebanon on May 14-15 in Washington.
