Beirut: Lebanon announced on Tuesday that a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran aims to end their ongoing military conflict, fostering peaceful resolutions and reducing regional tensions. This statement followed a meeting in Beirut between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, where they discussed the US-Iran framework deal that addresses hostilities affecting Lebanon and other fronts.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Lebanese presidency released a statement indicating that President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam evaluated the reactions to the US-Iran agreement. They also discussed the communications made with Lebanon regarding this matter. The talks included preparations for the upcoming US-mediated negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, scheduled to occur in Washington next week.
The Lebanese presidency's statement highlighted that the US-Iran understanding serves as a positive factor that promotes peace and the cessation of war in the region. Iranian officials have emphasized that stopping Israeli attacks in Lebanon is a primary objective of the proposed memorandum of understanding with the US.
Regional tensions have heightened since late February, following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, resulting in over 3,000 fatalities. In retaliation, Tehran launched strikes on Gulf countries and Israel and imposed restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz. A temporary truce was reached on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, leading to the announcement of a framework agreement to end the conflict, with formal signing expected in Switzerland on July 19.
Since March 2, Israel has intensified its offensive on Lebanon, resulting in thousands of casualties and over 1 million displaced individuals, according to the latest official figures. Israeli forces have advanced more than 10 kilometers into Lebanon, occupying areas in the south, some for decades and others since the previous war between 2023 and 2024.
