Members of Hellenic Diplomatic Academic visit Cyprus

The Hellenic Diplomatic Academy under Ambassador Michalis Diamesis paid a five-day visit to Cyprus between June 25 to 29, in the framework of the training of new Ambassadors, a post on Facebook by the Greek Embassy said. The new Embassy attachés visited the cultural center of the Municipality of Famagusta and were briefed by occupied Famagusta mayor Simos Ioannou and the Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus Ioannis Papameletiou on the situation, due to the ongoing occupation of Cyprus' northern third by Turkish troops since 1974. The delegation was received by the President of the Republic Nikos Christodouides, Archbishop Georgios and the President of the House Foreign and European Affairs Committee Harris Georgiades. The members of the delegation also met with the Chief of the General Staff of the National Guard Lieutenant General Georgios Tsitsikostas and visited the Search and Rescue Coordination Center in Larnaca and the ELDYK Camp in Malounta. The Hellenic Diplomatic Academy also visited the tombs of the E OKA anticolonial struggle heroes and the Tomb of Makedonitissa where they paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and heroes. They were also briefed on the Cyprus issue by the the MFA Permanent Secretary Andreas Kakouris, the Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and officials of the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They also visited the monasteries of Kykkos and Agios Neophytos, the archaeological sites and the museum of Palaipafos and the UN headquarters in Nicosia airport area as well as the anthropological laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP). Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Last January, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices ro le on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
