MPs held a minute's silence in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of Cyprus at the beginning of the plenary of the House of Representatives on Thursday ahead of the anniversary of Cyprus' Independence Day on October 1st. We ought to continue the legacy of those who fought for freedom and independence and we must keep their memory enduring, MP Zacharias Koulias said who presided over the plenary said, noting that we have a duty to struggle for a free, reunited, peaceful and independent Cyprus. Referring to the anniversary of Cyprus independence on October 1st, he said that the date marks the very specific moment the midnight of August 15 to the early hours of August 16 when the Treaty of Independence was signed in this very chamber. Koulias said that on this day we look back to the souls of all those who fought for a proud and united Cyprus , adding however that the road to independence was not easy but was full of sacrifices and hard struggles, ending with the EOKA anticolonia l struggle. He said that the junta coup and the Turkish invasion of 1974 divided our homeland but we keep the struggle for justice, peace and reunification.
