NATO Chief Praises Trkiye’s Defense Industry Organization Ahead of Ankara Summit

Ankara: The chief of NATO announced that the alliance's urgent need to enhance defense industrial production will be a key topic at the upcoming July summit in Ankara, highlighting Trkiye as a prime example of effective defense industry organization.

According to Anadolu Agency, Secretary-General Mark Rutte commended Trkiye's contribution to the defense sector, noting its extensive network of over 3,000 companies, during a press conference following a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden. Rutte emphasized the necessity for NATO to increase production and adapt its industrial base to meet current demands.

Rutte mentioned that the foreign ministers focused on reinforcing the alliance and reaffirming commitments to collective defense, in preparation for the July 7-8 summit in Ankara. The discussions in Helsingborg centered on ensuring NATO's readiness to tackle present and future threats.

Discussing the preparations for the Ankara summit, Rutte remarked on the alignment within NATO and the shared goals among member countries. He highlighted the expected focus on increased defense spending and the goal of reaching a 5% GDP investment target. Rutte confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's attendance at the summit.

Rutte also addressed the need for accelerated industrial production on both sides of the Atlantic, following last year's Hague summit commitment to increased defense spending. He noted the progress seen in defense investments by European allies and Canada, which rose by 20%.

Acknowledging the current shortfall in production capabilities, Rutte said foreign ministers discussed the urgent need to boost defense industrial production across the alliance. He emphasized the importance of closer cooperation to enhance industrial capacity and reaffirmed the allies' commitment to NATO's collective defense principles, particularly Article 5 of the NATO charter.

'Our resolve and ability to defend every ally is absolute. Were anyone to be foolish enough to attack us, the response would be devastating. This is a defensive alliance. We are strengthening NATO to deter aggression and to ensure we are able to defend it if necessary.'
