NATO Nears Completion of Arctic Mission Plans, Says Top Commander

Luxembourg: NATO's top military commander in Europe announced that the alliance is in the final stages of planning a new mission in the Arctic, aimed at countering increased Russian and Chinese activity in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, US Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, shared these developments during a working visit to Luxembourg. He held discussions with Defense Minister Yuriko Backes and Chief of Defense Steve Thull. Grynkewich disclosed that the mission, called 'Arctic Sentry,' is nearing the completion of its preparatory phase, though it has not yet commenced.

Grynkewich revealed that further details on the Arctic mission will be provided by NATO's Joint Force Command in Norfolk, Virginia. A formal announcement may follow soon, contingent on the fulfillment of necessary conditions.

Additionally, Grynkewich affirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to NATO's collective defense clause, Article 5. He emphasized that there are no signs of a diminished US role in NATO and highlighted efforts to maintain the alliance's military strength.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Grynkewich stated that demilitarization is not feasible while the conflict persists, citing the challenging situation due to winter conditions and continued Russian strikes on infrastructure. He mentioned that the US has re-established direct communication with Russia, but any further political decisions will be addressed at the political level.
