Netanyahu Announces Israeli Forces’ Advance Beyond Litani River Into Southern Lebanon

Beirut: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli military forces have crossed the Litani River in southern Lebanon, marking an escalation in the ongoing conflict. This move indicates an expansion of the Israeli ground offensive beyond previously declared areas.

According to Anadolu Agency, Netanyahu made the announcement during a seminar in the Jordan Valley, stating, "We attacked Beirut now, and we attacked Tyre yesterday, and our forces crossed the Litani River. We are striking them and will strike them forcefully," referring specifically to Hezbollah. The Litani River, which is Lebanon's main river, originates west of Baalbek and flows through the Bekaa Valley before reaching the southern part of the country.

Netanyahu further claimed that the Israeli military is committed to neutralizing Hezbollah's drone capabilities, which have been a significant concern for Israel. The Israeli government has been vocal about the threat posed by these drones, describing them as a 'major threat' due to their challenging detection.

Despite a ceasefire agreement announced on April 17 and extended until early July, Israel has reportedly continued to violate the truce, prompting Hezbollah to retaliate with rocket and drone attacks targeting Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.

Since March 2, Israel's large-scale offensive in Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of 3,269 people and injuries to 9,840, with over 1 million displaced, as per official figures up to Wednesday. The Israeli military has made significant advances, occupying areas in southern Lebanon and progressing approximately 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory since the onset of the current conflict.
