Ankara:OpenAI CEO Sam Altman suggests that society should accept certain risks associated with artificial intelligence in exchange for its benefits. He distinguishes OpenAI's approach to AI safety from that of competitor Anthropic.
According to Anadolu Agency, Altman expressed in an interview with Politico that the world should be open to some negative outcomes due to the advantages and empowerment AI offers. His statement arises amidst growing concerns about the rapid advancement of AI systems and recent security incidents.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently advocated for slowing down AI model enhancements to allow developers and evaluators more time to address potential risks. In a September 12 essay, Amodei emphasized the need to decelerate AI improvements while still making effective use of the time gained.
While Altman agreed with elements of Amodei's proposal, he disagreed with limiting AI control to a select group of developers. He criticized the idea of centralizing AI control, calling it an "unacceptable tradeoff," and supported a more open regulatory approach with wider access to AI technology.
The debate over AI safety has intensified following reports of unexpected and potentially hazardous behavior from advanced AI systems. Altman stressed that the positive impact of AI will outweigh its negative aspects, although he acknowledged the importance of avoiding catastrophic risks, such as losing control over AI.
