The Cyprus issue, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Iraq were discussed, among other things, in a meeting held on Wednesday in New York between Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Prime Minister of Iraq, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani. More specifically, bilateral relations and ways to further promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, security, education and infrastructure, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region and the developments in the Cyprus conflict, were discussed, among other things. The two leaders also reviewed the progress achieved in matters of bilateral cooperation based on Memoranda and Agreements signed between the two countries during the visit of the President of Iraq to Cyprus in December 2023, according to a statement from the Presidency. The possibility of a visit by the President of the Republic to Baghdad as a follow-up to the visit of the Iraqi President to Cyprus was also discussed. Cypr us has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Source: Cyprus News Agency
