Baghdad: The leader of Iraq's Badr Organization, Hadi al-Amiri, stated on Sunday that regulating weapons in the country is a 'purely Iraqi decision,' dismissing any potential conflict between the state and armed resistance groups.

According to Anadolu Agency, Amiri assured that there will be no confrontation between the state and resistance forces. In a speech broadcast by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), he emphasized that regulating weapons is a legitimate national and constitutional goal, crucial for building a strong state capable of safeguarding Iraq and maintaining its sovereignty.

Amiri also highlighted that combating corruption is a shared commitment of the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite parties, and reiterated support for Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's anti-corruption initiatives.

The challenge of weapons outside state control remains a significant security and political issue in Iraq, with various armed factions operating independently or under the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). The PMF, an official Iraqi security body, was established in 2014 following a religious edict by top cleric Ali al-Sistani to fight ISIS (Daesh) terrorists and was integrated into the armed forces by a 2016 government decision.

In June, Iraqi military spokesman Sabah al-Numan announced the formation of a committee to oversee efforts in bringing unregulated weapons under state control.
