Ankara: A 38-year-old man was killed by a shark on Rottnest Island in Western Australia, local media reported on Saturday. Emergency officials stated that the victim was airlifted by a rescue helicopter to a hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, as reported by local broadcaster SBS News.
According to Anadolu Agency, Police Sergeant Michael Wear at Rottnest Island Police Station described the man's injuries as severe, noting that the victim was bitten on the lower legs. This attack was one of four shark incidents recorded within a span of two days, prompting officials to close numerous beaches in the area.
The attack marks the third shark-related death in the region recently. Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination, attracts swimmers, divers, and holidaymakers. Australian scientists suggest that increasingly crowded waters and rising ocean temperatures are influencing sharks' migratory patterns, potentially contributing to a rise in attacks.
