Somalia and Ethiopia Reaffirm Sovereignty and Unity in Ankara Declaration

ANKARA: Somalia and Ethiopia have formally reaffirmed their mutual respect for each other's sovereignty, unity, and independence through a joint declaration mediated by Turkey. This significant development was announced during a press conference in Ankara, attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. According to Anadolu Agency, the Ankara Declaration, released by Turkey's Communications Directorate, emphasized a frank and constructive dialogue between the leaders. The declaration highlighted their commitment to each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and adherence to international law and the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union. The leaders agreed to move past previous differences and contentious issues, focusing instead on cooperation for shared prosperity. Somalia acknowledged Ethiopian soldiers' contributions to African Union missions and recognized the potential benefits of Ethiopia's assured access to the sea, while respecting Somalia's territorial integrity. The declaration also set a timeline for technical negotiations, facilitated by Turkey, to begin by the end of February 2025 and conclude within four months. The discussions will aim to finalize commercial arrangements that grant Ethiopia reliable access to the sea under Somali sovereignty. Turkey's role in facilitating and supporting these commitments was welcomed by both parties, who pledged to resolve any differences peacefully, with Turkey's assistance as necessary.
