Beirut: A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) was found near the Philippine Senate building in Pasay on Monday, ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s scheduled State of the Nation Address. The discovery was made by the Senate's Special Security Unit during a routine inspection at around 8 am local time (0000GMT).
According to Anadolu Agency, the unit immediately requested assistance from an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Pasay police, who successfully neutralized the suspected device. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Earlier that day, an explosion, also suspected to be caused by an IED, occurred near the entrance of the Department of Justice in Manila. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, and the Philippine National Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit is conducting a technical examination of the scene.
The Justice Ministry assured the public that the situation was under control, and the Justice Department compound remained secure. In light of these incidents, around 20,000 police officers were deployed to ensure "peace and order" during President Marcos' fifth State of the Nation Address in Quezon City.
In his address, President Marcos announced plans to revisit nuclear energy production, with approximately 200 energy projects underway aimed at enhancing power supply and reducing electricity rates. He emphasized the potential of nuclear energy, which is already utilized in sectors like medicine and agriculture.
Marcos also revealed plans for a rocket launch test next year in Cagayan, in collaboration with a South Korean aerospace company. Additionally, he addressed the negative impact of social media on children, calling for stronger protections against harmful content.
In a nod to international relations, Marcos reaffirmed his commitment to uphold the landmark 2016 arbitral ruling, which supports the Philippines' maritime rights in the South China Sea, despite China's rejection of the ruling. Meanwhile, more than 50 demonstrators were arrested during protests related to the address, facing charges of vandalism and violating local ordinances.
