Tatar rejects President’s proposal for joint meeting with UN official

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has rejected a proposal by Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, to have a joint meeting with the UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca when the latter will be paying a visit to Cyprus on August 27-29 a source has told CNA, invited to comment on relevant information published on philenews website.

Christodoulides' proposal was conveyed to Jenca when he contacted Nicosia at the beginning of this week to inform about his forthcoming visit to Cyprus. The UN official notified Nicosia on Thursday that the Turkish Cypriot leader rejected the proposal.

As a result, the source noted, Jenca will be having separate meetings with President Christodoulides and Tatar, during his visit to the island.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
