Trkiye to Host COP31, Aiming to Enhance Climate Diplomacy

Antalya:Trkiye is set to host the United Nations climate summit COP31 from November 9-20, offering a vital platform for the country to present its vision for climate diplomacy to the global community. Communications Director Burhanettin Duran emphasized the significance of this event during a panel titled "From Zero Waste to COP31 Trkiye's Climate Diplomacy" at the Communications Directorate.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Duran highlighted the pressing climate challenges such as biodiversity loss, ocean pollution, and global warming, which have surpassed the capacity of individual nations to tackle independently. He underscored the necessity of climate diplomacy, which involves international negotiations and cooperation, as a means to address these issues effectively.

Duran also discussed a climate diplomacy book compiled by the Communications Directorate, aiming to consolidate Trkiye's experiences and contributions to policymaking in the field. He stressed the importance of reflecting scientific knowledge in political decision-making processes, suggesting that international policies should balance national sovereignty with global responsibilities.

Trkiye's comprehensive climate strategy includes ratifying the Paris Agreement and setting a 2053 net-zero emissions target. Initiatives like the Zero Waste program, spearheaded by First Lady Emine Erdogan, have positioned Trkiye as a leader in promoting sustainable practices globally. The UN General Assembly's declaration of March 30 as International Zero Waste Day, supported by 105 countries, highlights this achievement.

Duran addressed the environmental impact of conflicts, citing Israel's actions in Gaza as exacerbating the climate crisis through significant greenhouse gas emissions. He called for improved public communication to prevent misinformation and emphasized the role of media in promoting solutions rather than focusing solely on the risks of climate change.

Trkiye envisions a long-term climate communication strategy, incorporating age-appropriate education and leveraging media outlets like TRT and Anadolu's "Green Line" project to enhance environmental awareness. Duran expressed optimism that COP31 would foster trust and cooperation among nations, translating climate commitments into tangible actions and shared solutions. The Communications Directorate is facilitating media coverage of the summit, with accreditation for approximately 1,400 journalists already completed. Duran expressed confidence that the event would successfully unite countries around common climate goals.
