Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a 5-day postponement of planned strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. This decision follows what he described as 'very good and productive' discussions with Tehran over the past two days.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed optimism about the conversations with Iran, which he said have focused on resolving hostilities in the Middle East. He shared this update on his social media platform, Truth Social, highlighting the 'tenor and tone' of the recent talks. As a result, he directed the Department of Defense to delay any military action against Iranian energy infrastructure for a five-day period. However, Trump noted that the pause in military action is contingent upon the ongoing success of these discussions.

The decision comes amid a backdrop of regional tension, which has been escalating since a joint US-Israel offensive on Iran on February 28. This offensive resulted in the death of over 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and other regional countries, including Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets. These actions have caused significant casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions in global markets and aviation.
