Washington: US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday in an attempt to delay a ban of the popular short-video app TikTok for 75 days. The executive order aims to provide more time to negotiate a resolution that ensures national security while maintaining access to the platform for its 170 million American users.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed his belief that the United States should receive a portion of TikTok's value, suggesting the app could be worth a trillion dollars. While signing the orders after returning to the Oval Office, Trump mentioned the potential for the US to sell or close TikTok, indicating that an approval from China might be necessary, although he expressed confidence in receiving it.
Trump's recent inauguration for a second term marks a significant shift in the US government, with expectations of widespread impact both domestically and internationally. Meanwhile, his administration is exploring the possibility of establishing a "joint venture" involving the US and unspecified other entities, which could see the United States partnering with interested parties in TikTok's future operations.
Additionally, the US Supreme Court's decision on Friday upheld a law mandating that TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, divest from the app, or face a ban. In response, TikTok, which had gone offline earlier on Sunday, announced it was working to restore services to its US users after receiving assurances from Trump.
