The Foreign Office has urged all parties involved in the Cyprus issue to show flexibility with the aim to return to the UN-led talks for a settlement to the long-standing issue. The statement came as a response to a Cyprus News Agency question regarding the UK Government's expectations of the series of relevant meetings taking place this week in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: 'As a Guarantor Power and friend to all parties, the UK's support for the UN-led Cyprus settlement process is unwavering. We are urging all sides to show openness, flexibility and compromise, and to engage constructively with the UN towards a return to talks." The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides had a meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday. Guterres will also see the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Ersin Tatar later in the week. Today the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with the Cyprus issue featuring high on the agenda. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Source: Cyprus News Agency
