UNGA-European Council of decisive importance for Cyprus issue, says Komodromou

The upcoming United Nations General Assembly and the European Council to take place next month are considered to be of decisive importance for the efforts and the prospect for the resumption of the Cyprus talks, Deputy Government Spokesperson Doxa Komodromou said on Thursday.

Addressing an event organized by the Turkish-occupied Municipality of Lysi, Komodromou noted that once he resumed office, President Christodoulides' efforts were to the direction of the resumption of the dialogue with the aim to reunite the island.

She said that all efforts strive for a solution, based on the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, in line with the principles and values of the European Union and the acquis, adding that all these efforts are intensive.

Komodromou also said that it is our duty to struggle so that Cypriot Hellenism remains alive on this island.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
