Ankara: US Ambassador to Ankara, Tom Barrack, stated that the intelligence which led to an Israeli airstrike on a military air base in northern Syria was incorrect. The strike targeted the abandoned Abu al-Duhur Military Air Base located in the eastern Idlib province.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ambassador Barrack, who also serves as the special envoy for Syria and Iraq, expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind the airstrike but shared the information he had received. He mentioned that Israel had been informed that Trkiye might be transferring military assets to the Syrian air base and had relayed this intelligence to Washington.
The US conducted its own investigation into the intelligence, with Barrack noting, "We consulted our intelligence agencies, and the answer we received was that this claim was not true." He suggested that there might have been a miscommunication between the Israeli army, Mossad, and the Prime Minister's Office. Barrack emphasized that neither the US nor Trkiye had been informed of the attack beforehand.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Prime Minister's Office previously asserted that Turkish soldiers were attempting to establish a presence at the base and were deploying military installations heading southwards. However, Barrack praised the Turkish army, describing it as "strong and brave," and noted its capability and preparedness.
The Israeli military's attack involved warplanes striking the abandoned Abu al-Duhur Military Air Base, with no information provided regarding potential casualties or injuries. A Syrian official reported that Israeli warplanes conducted eight attacks on the base, focusing on the runway and an inactive hangar structure.
