Washington: Recent media reports have suggested that US envoys may visit Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to reignite stalled peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Despite previous US-mediated discussions earlier this year, negotiations have been on hold as Washington's focus shifted towards the Middle East.
According to Anadolu Agency, Russian state news agency Tass reported on August 8 that US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, might visit Kyiv and Moscow for discussions on the ongoing conflict. This potential visit follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's comments to Axios about a likely visit by the envoys being a result of his recent meeting with Trump at the White House.
The peace talks, which began under US mediation, have witnessed a pause due to the US's increased focus on Iran and the Middle Eastern conflicts that erupted on February 28. Prior to this shift, Russia and Ukraine engaged in three rounds of negotiations in January and February, led by the US, in an attempt to resolve their long-standing conflict.
The negotiations, held in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, managed to achieve a prisoner exchange but failed to secure a comprehensive resolution. In the ensuing period, the US conducted separate bilateral talks with both Russia and Ukraine, with the trilateral discussions being paused amidst the US's focus on the conflict in Iran.
Statements from Kyiv and Moscow highlight ongoing differences that have contributed to a deadlock in negotiations. Russia has reiterated demands for Ukraine's military withdrawal from the Donbas region and accused the US of diverging from 'understandings' reached during a summit between Putin and Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2025. Despite these challenges, Russia has praised the US efforts to end the war.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied any formal agreement was reached in Anchorage, stating that the proposals did not lead to an end to the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine has consistently rejected the withdrawal from Donbas and has sought security guarantees from Western allies.
The anticipated visit of US envoys is seen as a potential catalyst for reviving the peace process. President Zelenskyy, in a recent address, emphasized Ukraine's proposals to the US to end the conflict, including enhancing defense capabilities and applying pressure on Russia to halt the war.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin expressed Moscow's openness to constructive proposals that consider its interests, while rejecting any solution that does not address the conflict's root causes. The visit by US envoys could provide a platform for renewed discussions and potentially pave the way for a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
