Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly declared Washington's support for the people of Iran amid the ongoing protests that have been sweeping the nation. "The United States supports the brave people of Iran," Rubio stated on the US social media platform X, indicating a clear stance from the US government on the situation in Iran.

According to Anadolu Agency, the protests, which have been ongoing across Iran, have resulted in the deaths of at least 65 individuals. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), based in Washington, reported that among the deceased, 50 were protesters, 14 were law enforcement and security officials, and one was a government-affiliated civilian. The demonstrations, which have spread to around 180 cities across all 31 provinces of Iran, have also resulted in dozens of injuries and the detention of 2,311 people. Reports indicate that many of the injuries were caused by pellet shots and plastic bullets.

The Iranian authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the casualties. The protests initially erupted due to the sharp decline in the value of the Iranian rial and worsening economic conditions, beginning on December 28 near Tehran's Grand Bazaar and subsequently spreading to multiple cities.

US President Donald Trump also commented on the situation, stating that Iran is "in big trouble" as the protests continue to escalate. Trump emphasized that the US is closely monitoring the developments and issued a warning to Iranian authorities against the use of lethal force. In response, Iran has accused the US and Israel of instigating the unrest and has warned that its security forces and judiciary will not tolerate any acts of sabotage.
