Yemen’s Displacement Crisis Escalates Amid Taiz’s Looming Health Emergency

Taiz:Around 260,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since early August due to renewed military escalation, with local authorities in the Taiz province warning of an imminent health crisis caused by fuel and medicine shortages stemming from a Houthi blockade.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted that fighting has forced nearly 260,000 people to flee their homes since early August, with nearly half seeking refuge in Taiz governorate. The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) confirmed 251 civilian casualties, including 57 fatalities, half of whom were children.

Humanitarian partners have reached over 174,000 displaced individuals, providing essential aid such as food, hygiene kits, and emergency cash to nearly 60% of displaced households. OCHA emphasized the urgent need for shelter, food, and cash among newly displaced families and called on all parties to protect civilians and allow safe passage for humanitarian aid.

Local authorities in Taiz have expressed grave concerns about the health crisis facing premature babies and newborns in the provincial capital's hospitals due to the blockade. The shortage of fuel and medical supplies is threatening essential services for young patients, leading to urgent calls for intervention to ensure the continued operation of neonatal care units.

The conflict in Yemen intensified after the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition intervention in March 2015 to support the internationally recognized government.
