Cyprus is an active player in tackling climate change and hosts international conferences to this end, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs, Harris Georgiades said, at the 17th Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of small European States in Malta, representing the President of the Parliament. Georgiades pointed out that the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and that in Cyprus in particular, extreme phenomena are very noticeable. He added that national policies are focused both on addressing climate change and mitigating its effects and that Cyprus can contribute to the fight against climate change, by adopting green solutions. He further said that Cyprus is in line with the EU Green Deal and the goal of zero emissions by 2050. Cyprus MP also referred to the existing projects subsidized by the Government with the aim of providing incentives for the use of Renewable Energy Sources, for th e implementation of the circular economy and for energy upgrading of businesses. He underlined that climate change can only be tackled with collective actions and emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the opportunities for cooperation, which can highlight the leading role of small states. He also referred to the invitation of the President of the Parliament Annita Demetriou to her counterparts to participate in the 18th Conference of Speakers of the Parliaments of small European States, which will be hosted by the House of Representatives in 2025.
