European Leaders Urge Peace in Ukraine, Defense Reinforcement

Brussels: European leaders urged lasting peace in Ukraine and reinforcing defense as they gathered Thursday in Brussels before a EU Council's special summit on European defense and Ukraine. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated at the doorstep of the summit the importance of rearming Europe while continuing to support Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda affirmed, "We are committed also to support Ukraine by 0.35% of our GDP each year, we calculated, if our countries will commit to paying the same amount, Ukraine would receive pound 43 billion ($46 billion)." Nauseda suggested that Ukraine not only needs military and financial support but political support as well.

Nauseda further proposed setting an orientational date for Ukraine's membership in the European Union, suggesting January 1, 2030, as a political commitment rather than a legal definition. He emphasized the significance of France's 'nuclear umbrella' as a serious deterrent for Russia.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina highlighted the importance of acting as a united Europe, boosting military industry, and maintaining flexibility in the European defense budget. She stressed the need for 'peace through strength' to achieve lasting peace.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden commented on the historical times, noting the changing positions of traditional allies in the face of a challenging situation in Europe. He reiterated the importance of unity, focusing on competitiveness, defense, and support for Ukraine.
