Cairo: Egypt's foreign minister engaged in discussions with counterparts from Oman and Iran, as well as US envoy Steve Witkoff, aiming to alleviate regional tensions and establish a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

According to Anadolu Agency, Badr Abelatty conducted separate phone conversations with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. These discussions revolved around a recent series of indirect negotiations in Oman between Tehran and Washington, as reported by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry. The Egyptian diplomat also held similar discussions with US envoy Witkoff.

Abdelatty expressed gratitude for Oman's role in facilitating the negotiations and reiterated his support for efforts aimed at achieving political solutions through dialogue to enhance regional security and stability. He also acknowledged the cooperative approach of the US and Iran, noting that such engagement could lead to solutions that mitigate regional tensions.

The Egyptian foreign minister expressed hope that the ongoing dialogue would initiate a new phase of de-escalation and quickly result in a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. This diplomatic outreach follows Oman's hosting of the first round of indirect US-Iran talks, which were described as positive by both parties. A second round is planned for next week.

The discussions primarily focused on Iran's nuclear program and the potential easing of sanctions. While the US and Israel accuse Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons, Tehran insists its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, such as electricity generation.
