Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday condoled over the death of Pope Francis, expressing that he is "deeply saddened."

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan conveyed his sorrow upon learning of Pope Francis' passing, recognizing his role as the spiritual leader of the Catholic world and Head of State of the Vatican. Erdogan noted Pope Francis' significant efforts regarding the genocide in Gaza and the Palestine issue, highlighting his dedication to fostering dialogue among different faith communities. Erdogan emphasized that Pope Francis took initiative in response to humanitarian crises, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue and the genocide in Gaza.

Erdogan extended his condolences on behalf of himself and the Turkish nation to the pope's family, the Vatican State, and the Catholic world. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz also shared his condolences with the Vatican and the Catholic community, acknowledging Pope Francis' leadership in addressing humanitarian crises and his determined stance against the genocide in Gaza and injustices faced by Palestinians.

Ali Erbas, head of Trkiye's Presidency of Religious Affairs, also offered his condolences to Catholics worldwide, especially those in Trkiye. Erbas recalled his visit to the Vatican on April 13, 2024, during which he and the pope made a joint appeal for action to end the suffering in Gaza. Erbas highlighted Pope Francis' deep sorrow over indiscriminate attacks in Gaza targeting mosques, churches, children, women, and innocent people.

The Vatican announced Pope Francis' death earlier Monday. He had been admitted to a hospital in Rome in February with bronchitis, which developed into bilateral pneumonia. After a 38-day stay, he was discharged to continue his recovery at his Vatican residence.
