Ankara: Trkiye's external assets totaled $378.2 billion as of the end of February, marking a 3% increase year-on-year, as revealed by official figures from the Central Bank on Monday. In contrast, the country's liabilities against non-residents stood at $657.2 billion, which represents a 1.5% decrease compared to February of the previous year.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trkiye's net international investment position (NIIP), which is calculated as assets minus liabilities, was recorded at minus $279 billion. This reflects a decline of $9.7 billion. The reserve asset items saw an increase, reaching $165.4 billion, up 6.6% from the previous year.
The sub-items under assets showed varied trends, with direct investments totaling $72.6 billion, experiencing a rise of 2%. In contrast, other investments were slightly down by 0.5%, totaling $136.2 billion. Foreign exchange deposits of resident banks held abroad increased by 4.4% to $39 billion.
Among the sub-items under liabilities, Turkish lira deposits of resident banks held abroad decreased by 7.1%, amounting to $23.1 billion. Direct investments under liabilities were recorded at $169.6 billion by the end of February, showing a decline of 6.7%. However, portfolio investments rose by 3.2%, reaching $128.3 billion during the same period. Other investments under liabilities also saw a rise, increasing by 1.1% to reach $359.3 billion.
