El-Fasher: At least 33 civilians have been killed and dozens more injured following artillery shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State in western Sudan, according to the Sudanese army. The military reported that RSF forces began an indiscriminate artillery bombardment on Sunday morning.

According to Anadolu Agency, there has been no immediate comment from the RSF regarding the incident. Earlier in the week, the paramilitary group claimed to have taken control of the Zamzam refugee camp in El-Fasher following clashes with the army forces.

UN figures indicate that at least 400 civilians have been killed and nearly 400,000 displaced due to ongoing fighting in the region. El-Fasher has been a focal point for deadly clashes between the Sudanese army and RSF since May 2024, despite international warnings about the potential risks to the city, which is a hub for humanitarian efforts across all five Darfur states.

The conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army began on April 15, 2023, as both groups vied for control of the country, resulting in thousands of deaths and contributing to one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises. More than 20,000 have died, and 15 million have been displaced according to the UN and local authorities, although research from US scholars suggests the death toll may be as high as 130,000.
