China Advocates Ceasefire as Essential for Peace in Ukraine

Beijing: China on Monday emphasized the importance of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, describing it as a 'necessary step' towards achieving peace. This statement came shortly after the expiration of a 30-hour unilateral Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin, which ended at midnight on Monday without any extension. During the ceasefire period, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of violations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed reporters in Beijing, expressing China's support for efforts towards a ceasefire. "China welcomes all efforts towards a ceasefire," Guo stated, underscoring it as a crucial step for peace. Guo further expressed hope that all involved parties will continue to engage in dialogue and negotiation to resolve the crisis.

In light of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has put forward a proposal to Russia, suggesting a 30-day cessation of strikes on civilian infrastructure as a potential pathway to de-escalation.
