Paris: The EU will pursue a gradual lifting of sanctions on Syria, French President Emmanuel Macron announced during a joint news conference with his Syrian counterpart, Ahmed al-Sharaa, who visited Paris on his first trip to a European nation since assuming office.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron stated that the EU is prepared to gradually lift European economic sanctions if Syria continues on its current path. He also mentioned initiating a "process of persuasion" with the US to encourage them to follow the same approach. Additionally, he emphasized collaboration with the UNHCR and other partners to establish a regional framework that would facilitate the return of Syria's talents and vital forces.

Macron highlighted the necessity of providing guarantees on the proper use of international funds, with France ensuring its priorities are considered in this framework, given Syria's stability and unity are essential for the Middle East's stability. He expressed his intent to advocate against the renewal of sanctions imposed during the former Assad regime and to work with member states that still have reservations.

He criticized recent Israeli attacks on Syria, arguing that such actions do not ensure long-term security and called for a peaceful transition that ensures Syria's stability and sovereignty, taking into account its civil society's components. Macron also identified Daesh as a persistent terrorist threat to Syria and international peace, emphasizing the need for cooperation and expressing hopes for continued active engagement from partners, including the US.

Additionally, Macron conveyed France's readiness to facilitate negotiations between Lebanon and Syria.
