Tehran: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Iran's north-central province of Semnan on Friday evening. The seismic event occurred at 21.19 local time and was centered around Sorkheh, a district within the province.

According to Anadolu Agency, the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 17 kilometers from Sorkheh and 36 kilometers from the city of Semnan. Earlier in the day, state-run Press TV reported a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in the same region, which was also felt in Tehran and Alborz.

As of now, there have been no reports of damage resulting from the earthquake. Iran's geographical location in a seismically active zone has made it susceptible to frequent earthquakes. In recent history, the country has experienced significant seismic events, including a devastating earthquake in 2013 in the city of Bam, which resulted in the deaths of at least 34,000 people.

More recently, in July 2022, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit the southern province of Hormozgan along the Persian Gulf coast, leading to the deaths of at least five people and injuring over 80.
