Two American Workers Injured in Grenade Attack at Gaza Aid Site

Gaza: Two American aid workers were injured on Saturday when grenades were thrown at an Israel- and US-backed food distribution site in southern Gaza, according to local media and aid groups. The incident took place in Khan Younis, where the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) reported on X that the two American staff members sustained non-fatal injuries.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israel's public broadcaster KAN confirmed that the Israeli army has launched an investigation to determine whether the injuries were caused by hostile activity. The Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth noted that the attack is suspected to have been carried out by Hamas gunmen using a hand grenade. The Palestinian group has yet to issue a statement regarding these claims.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial Israel-backed US mechanism, has been operating in the Gaza Strip since May 27. Within two months, at least 613 aid-seeking Palestinians were reportedly killed at or near its aid-distribution sites by the Israeli army, as reported by Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

In response, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) and over 170 NGOs, including Oxfam, Amnesty International, and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), have signed a joint statement calling for an end to 'the deadly Israeli distribution scheme, including the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation,' and a return to UN-led coordination mechanisms.

Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues its military actions in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of more than 57,300 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children, since October 2023.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice due to its actions in the enclave.
