Nyingchi: China has embarked on constructing the world's largest hydropower project in the Yarlung Zangbo River gorge in southwestern Tibet. This monumental undertaking was officially inaugurated by Premier Li Qiang in a ceremony held in the city of Nyingchi, located in the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region.

According to Anadolu Agency, Premier Li Qiang described the initiative as a "project of the century." He emphasized the importance of employing advanced technologies, equipment, techniques, and materials to ensure high-quality construction. Once completed, the hydropower station is projected to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy annually, surpassing the capacity of the Three Gorges Dam, which is currently the largest in the world with an 88.2 billion kWh capacity.

The ambitious project includes the construction of five cascade hydropower stations, with an estimated total investment of around 1.2 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately $167.8 billion. The launch event was attended by government officials, engineers, and local residents, highlighting the project's significance on a national scale.

The hydropower station is anticipated to significantly contribute to China's climate objectives, assisting the nation in reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, as reported by The Global Times.
