Tel aviv: Israel's military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir is contemplating resignation if the stalled negotiations with the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, continue without progress, media reports indicated on Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper highlighted that Zamir has reached a crucial impasse in his relationship with political leaders, suggesting that resignation might be his sole option if the deadlock persists. The newspaper reported that the dispute has escalated beyond typical institutional disagreements, with some Cabinet ministers allegedly making derogatory remarks about the army during meetings.

Channel 12 television further reported that Zamir is discontented with the ongoing political-military divide and has urged the government to make decisive choices regarding the future of the Gaza conflict. The report noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refrained from committing to definitive policies, thereby placing the responsibility of the situation in Gaza squarely on the military.

The core of the disagreement revolves around the fate of Israeli captives in Gaza and the continuation of military operations absent a clear political strategy. Despite international pressure for a ceasefire, Israel has maintained a harsh offensive on Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. The ongoing bombardment has devastated the region and caused severe food shortages.
