Kabul: Afghanistan's Taliban administration has sealed a $10 billion deal aimed at generating, transmitting, and distributing 10,000 megawatts of electricity. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Water and Energy and Azizi Energy Private Company.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Office announced on X that the deal will enable Afghanistan to achieve complete self-sufficiency in electricity production within 7 to 10 years. The country also aims to begin exporting electricity abroad as a result of the agreement.

The statement further highlighted that the deal is expected to create new job opportunities for millions of Afghans. This agreement is one of the most significant since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021.

Mirwais Azizi, CEO of Azizi Energy, stated that the company will utilize gas, coal, water, wind, and solar energy across various parts of Afghanistan to generate the required energy. The project's design phase is anticipated to be completed in the next six months.

The initial phase of the project will see the launch of electricity projects generating between 2,000 to 3,000 megawatts.
