Anchorage: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, upon his arrival in Alaska, emphasized that Moscow holds a "clear, understandable position" with strong arguments for the anticipated meeting between President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov addressed Trump's comments indicating a 25% chance of negotiation failure. In an interview with the Russian Rossiya 1 TV channel in Anchorage, Lavrov stated that the Russian side refrains from making predictions beforehand. "We know we have arguments and a clear, understandable position. We'll present it," he asserted.

Lavrov highlighted the groundwork laid by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who has been representing President Trump in preparatory talks. "I hope we'll continue this useful conversation," Lavrov added, expressing optimism about the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The meeting between Putin and Trump is scheduled to take place in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, aiming to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine that has persisted since February 2022.

Lavrov's arrival in the U.S. was marked by his choice of attire-a sweatshirt emblazoned with "USSR." Analysts suggest this was a symbolic gesture to remind both nations of their alliance during World War II, with Alaska serving as a historical link between the two countries.

Alaska's connection to Russia dates back to its time as a Russian region before being sold by Tsar Alexander II to the United States for $7.2 million in 1867. During World War II, the U.S. facilitated arms supplies to the USSR under the Lend-Lease program.

Currently, three out of five members of the Russian delegation, including Lavrov, presidential envoy for economic issues Kirill Dmitriyev, and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, have arrived in Alaska. Defense Minister Andrey Belousov is expected later, while presidential aide Yury Ushakov will accompany President Putin, who made a stop in the Magadan region en route to Alaska to address domestic matters.
