Portugal: Portugal activated the Civil Protection Mechanism after the first casualty was reported in the ongoing wildfires, which continue to rage across various regions.

According to Anadolu Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the activation on social media platform X, emphasizing the spirit of European solidarity as support is mobilized. The fires, which have been a persistent threat since midweek, prompted the Portuguese Interior Ministry to extend the alert situation with prohibitions in place until August 17.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Spain, wildfires have resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries. Approximately 1,700 residents have been evacuated as fires devastate regions including Zamora, Leon, and Ourense. Initial assessments suggest that the fires in Zamora and Leon could be some of the largest recorded in Spain. Spanish authorities have reported 16 major fires at risk level 2, with several roads closed and arrests made in connection with suspected arson.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez addressed the public via X, acknowledging the extreme risk of new fires and pledging full governmental resources to combat the blazes. The fires have already consumed nearly 115,000 hectares across Spain.

In France, high temperatures are exacerbating fire risks, particularly in the southwest. Meteo-France has reported intensified conditions, and a 58-year-old man was arrested in the Rhone department on suspicion of setting multiple vegetation fires. Authorities are also investigating the possibility of arson in a major wildfire in the Aude province that resulted in one fatality and significant property damage.

Albania is also experiencing a wave of wildfires, with 28 reported across several districts. However, the situation is showing signs of improvement according to broadcaster RTSH, citing the country's Defense Ministry.
