Yokohama: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday emphasized the importance of stronger global partnerships with Africa, asserting that countries hosting Africa's vast mineral resources should be the primary beneficiaries.

According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres made these remarks at the opening of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama. He highlighted that Africa possesses many critical minerals essential for renewable technologies but is often excluded from the economic benefits. Guterres stressed the need for these countries to benefit first and most, while also enhancing their participation in local and global value chains.

Guterres noted that Africa, with its young population, abundant natural resources, and entrepreneurial spirit, is well-positioned for progress. Despite having enormous potential for renewable energy, Africa receives only 2% of global investment in renewables, with 600 million Africans lacking access to electricity.

Furthermore, the UN chief called for reforms in global governance, advocating for permanent African representation on the Security Council and increased influence in international financial institutions. He emphasized that Africa should have a stronger voice in shaping its future, which includes the overdue reform of the Security Council.

Guterres also urged for decisive action on debt relief, highlighting that 34 African countries currently spend more on debt servicing than on health and education. The three-day summit in Japan has brought together leaders and representatives from about 50 African nations, alongside officials from international organizations.

In a separate meeting, Guterres and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba discussed UN reforms, nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and preparations for Expo 2025 in Osaka.
