Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Sunday that Ukraine will "never again be forced" into a compromise, as continued diplomatic efforts led by the United States aim to resolve the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy emphasized in a video address on Ukraine's Independence Day that the country will not endure the "shame" of compromise as defined by Russia. He asserted that Ukraine's future will be determined independently and that the international community recognizes and respects this stance. Zelenskyy acknowledged that although Ukraine has not fully achieved victory, it is not defeated, countering Russian claims of further military successes.

Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine has maintained its independence and portrayed the nation as a proactive force rather than a passive victim. He expressed confidence that Ukraine will secure a "sustainable, reliable, long-lasting peace" through strong security guarantees. He emphasized the importance of leaving a legacy of strength and independence for future generations.

Efforts to end the conflict have been a priority for US President Donald Trump since the start of his second term in January. These efforts gained momentum following a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, and a subsequent meeting in the Oval Office with Zelenskyy and European leaders.

In parallel developments, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to participate in Independence Day celebrations, marking Ukraine's separation from the Soviet Union in 1991. Carney, representing the first Western country to recognize Ukraine's independence, reiterated Canada's support for Ukraine and its commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace.

Carney's commitment was further echoed in a video message on social media platform X, where he described Canada's support as steadfast, affirming solidarity with Ukraine in its quest to defend sovereignty and pursue national aspirations.

Zelenskyy and Carney joined a ceremony at Kyiv's Sophia Square alongside various foreign officials, including US envoy Keith Kellogg. Zelenskyy honored Kellogg with Ukraine's Order of Merit, first class, acknowledging his contributions.
