‘Ships Will Continue Until Palestine Is Free,’ Says American Member of Freedom Flotilla Coalition

Ankara: Mary Ann Wright, a retired US colonel, former diplomat, and a member of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), declared that efforts to send ships to Gaza will persist until the blockade is lifted and Palestine is liberated. Wright, who has been actively involved with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition since the 2010 Mavi Marmara mission, emphasized the importance of continuing these missions despite previous setbacks, viewing it as a duty to resist what she perceives as a genocide.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wright has been a part of over 35 missions to Gaza. She insists that the detainment of ships and flotillas should not halt their efforts. Her involvement with the cause dates back to 2009, when she first visited Gaza and witnessed the destruction firsthand. Wright views the missions as a moral responsibility, stating that the Conscience Ship and other vessels represent a global stand against complicity in the events occurring in Gaza.

Criticizing the US government's support for Israel, Wright urged US citizens to oppose what she described as genocide and ethnic cleansing. She condemned Israel's actions against the Global Sumud Flotilla, labeling them as violations of international law due to the interception occurring in international waters.

Wright underscored the moral imperative for global citizens to reject the actions of Israeli leaders who, according to her, endorse violence against Palestinians. She recounted the detention of 462 individuals following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, suggesting that such actions by Israel aim to eliminate opposition. Wright believes that being a burden to Israel is essential in slowing down their actions against Palestinians.

Discussing a specific incident involving the Conscience ship, which was attacked off Malta, Wright highlighted the vulnerability of the flotilla's non-violent participants against Israel's military capabilities. She called for global support and solidarity, emphasizing the importance of standing up against the violence perpetrated by Israel.

Wright concluded by reflecting on her personal experiences in Gaza, noting the resilience of its people as a source of inspiration. She stressed the necessity of continuing the mission in solidarity with Gazans, despite the risks and challenges involved.
