Istanbul: Pope Leo XIV visited Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque on Saturday, echoing similar trips by past pontiffs. Previous papal visits to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, as it is officially known, signaled respect for Turkey’s Muslim majority.

According to France24.com, the visit drew backlash from a small nationalist minority. FRANCE 24’s Jasper Mortimer noted that only 40 protesters gathered in the city of 16 million.
