Paris: Discussions aimed at determining Russia's genuine readiness for peace will be launched 'in line with what we decided last week,' French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, vowing allies would remain united behind Ukraine and the principles of international law. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris after several hours of talks, Macron said the next phase of diplomacy will focus on compelling Moscow to provide 'full clarity' to American mediators about its intentions.
According to Anadolu Agency, US envoy Steve Witkoff was due in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, after US and Ukrainian officials held talks in Florida on Sunday. Macron emphasized that the discussions are set in motion to ensure Russia clarifies its willingness for peace to the American mediators. He expressed confidence in the unity of allies supporting Ukraine, citing the defense of international law and European security as paramount.
Macron criticized Moscow for its continued military actions, describing recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities, including deadly attacks on Dnipro, as impediments to peace. While addressing the issue of peace talks, Macron reiterated that any plan must be developed with Kyiv's input, highlighting that territorial and strategic matters should be resolved collaboratively with European partners.
Further talks involving the US and European allies are planned to explore the scope of American participation in long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Macron acknowledged the United States' mediating role and commended the American team's efforts.
Additionally, Macron announced a new round of EU sanctions targeting Russian oil revenues and efforts to circumvent shipping restrictions, marking a significant escalation in economic pressure on Russia's energy sector.
