Gaza: A total of 6,000 people who have lost limbs in Gaza due to Israel's war urgently need long-term rehabilitation, the Health Ministry stated, warning of severe and lasting humanitarian consequences for thousands of families.

According to Anadolu Agency, the statement was released in observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, highlighting the dire situation of amputees in Gaza. The ministry reported that 25% of all amputation cases involve children, who now face permanent disabilities at an early age.

The ministry emphasized that thousands of wounded civilians and their families are enduring significant humanitarian suffering. This situation underscores the urgent need for sustained physical rehabilitation, alongside psychological and social support services.

The ministry called upon relevant international organizations to prioritize amputees in Gaza and enhance access to specialized care and rehabilitation programs.

In September, Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), noted that Gaza has become home to the highest number of child amputees per capita worldwide since the onset of the Israeli war.

Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed more than 70,000 people in Gaza, predominantly women and children, and injured over 171,000 others. The assault left the enclave devastated, ceasing under a ceasefire deal that took effect on Oct. 10.
