Taipei: Three people were killed and five others injured after a man carried out a stabbing attack and threw a smoke grenade at a metro station in Taiwan, local media reported. The incident occurred at Taipei Main Station, the busiest railway hub in the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, the smoke grenade detonated inside the station, resulting in the death of a 57-year-old man. The assailant, a 27-year-old man identified by the surname Chang, was armed with a blade and smoke grenades. Reports indicated that Chang was wanted for draft evasion.

Before the attack, Chang reportedly set fire to his apartment, car, and two motorcycles. Police later recovered 25 Molotov cocktails from a hotel room where he had stayed two days prior to the incident. During the attack, he was also carrying firebombs.

The confrontation with police ended when Chang died after jumping from a rooftop. In response to the attack, Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te urged the public to remain calm and adhere to official guidance, especially in crowded areas and transport hubs. He advised people to report any suspicious individuals, items, or situations to police and station staff immediately.
