Deir ez-zor: Two Syrian Internal Security personnel were killed and two others were injured when an Internal Security checkpoint was attacked in the town of al-Bahra in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. The attack was reported by Alekhbariah TV.

According to Anadolu Agency, the incident occurred just hours before the Syrian government and the YPG reached a new comprehensive agreement, which includes a ceasefire and a framework for the group's gradual integration into military and administrative structures. This agreement was reached following a military operation in which Syrian forces regained large areas in eastern and northeastern Syria after what authorities described as repeated SDF breaches of earlier accords signed approximately 10 months prior.

The administration of President Ahmad al-Sharaa has been intensifying efforts to restore security and assert control over the country since the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The Syrian Army had launched an operation against the YPG on January 16 in areas west of the Euphrates River, which later expanded to the east of the river with the involvement of tribal forces, bringing most of the territories previously occupied by the group under government control.

A ceasefire and full integration agreement reached on January 18 between Damascus and the YPG included key provisions such as the group's complete withdrawal from Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, the transfer of public institutions in Hasakah to state authority, and the placement of all border crossings and energy resources under central government control. Despite the agreement, clashes resumed on January 19 after the YPG refused to comply, leading the Syrian government to declare a ceasefire on January 20, giving the group four days to proceed with integration.
